Tooth Fillings

Tooth cavities need to be filled as soon as possible to avoid decays. Fillings are also used to restore broken or chipped teeth depending on the location of the impacted tooth. Feel free to call our dental office on (905) 608-9000 to book your appointment or ask any questions you might have.

What are the types of dental fillings?

  • Composite Filling: They are made of composite materials and the shade, and colour are matched to your tooth. It is suited for all kinds of teeth but especially for frontal treatment. The composite ingredients are instantly mixed during the treatment and applied to the tooth cavity. They generally last from 5-10 years.
  • Porcelain Filling: they are also known as Inlays They are bonded to the teeth and is matched with the shape and colour.
  • Other options: There are other filling options that are rarely used nowadays such as amalgam filling and gold fillings. While these might be more resistant to wear and tear and hence can last for longer times, the amalgam filling specifically is not being used due to the controversy about its safety.

Which filling is the best for you?

There is no correct filling for you. The choice of fillings is based on the place of cavity, the cost, the extent of the repairs required and if you have any allergies to any materials.

Can you know if you require a filling?

Without a proper dental exam, you won’t be able to tell. A qualified dentist would advise on the type of treatment after conducting such an exam. Sometimes the cavity or the need for a filling is obvious to the naked eye and in most cases an x-ray would be required to determine the appropriate type of treatment.

Does insurance cover the cost of dental fillings?

Yes, most dental plans cover the cost of composite fillings.

How to maintain my tooth filling?

You can maintain the fillings by brushing your teeth twice a day regularly. Furthermore, floss and use a mouthwash at least once a day. You should also visit your dentist every six months so that he/she can make sure that the fillings are in proper health.

Would the tooth filling procedure feel painful?

After the dentist completes the filling, the patient may experience some pain and sensitivity in the affected area as the new tooth is just passing along signals to other teeth. Pain doesn’t indicate that there is anything wrong with the procedure completed. Your pain or sensitivity will reduce in a week’s time.

How long do your fillings last?

Your fillings can last for about 5-10 years. The life of fillings depends on which type of filling is applied to the cavity and how well you maintain your oral hygiene.

Can you eat after a dental filling?

This depends on the type of filling that was used by the dentist. For composite fillings; generally, they get hard instantly when the dentist uses the blue light, allowing you to eat solid foods an hour after the procedure is completed. Other fillings are not hardened so fast and therefore you may have to wait for 24 hours before eating solid foods again.
