Cosmetic Dentistry

The smile is the most eye-catching feature of our faces. With the advances in dental treatment techniques, you don’t have to live with your imperfect smile due to stained, misshaped, discoluored, broken or chipped teeth. You can achieve a perfect smile with cosmetic dentistry. Even a small change in your smile can bring a dramatic difference in your confidence and life.

What treatments are performed in cosmetic dentistry?

Cosmetic treatments are generally performed for aesthetic reasons, but sometimes it’s done for stuctural restoration. Some types of cosmetic dentistry are:

  1. Composite Bonding – Composite Bonding is a treatment that the dentist uses to repair a chipped tooth. It is also used if you have discoloured teeth. It’s a cheaper alternative than installing a dental crown.
  2. Dental Implants – When you have lost your tooth, dental implant is one of the best available methods to replace a tooth. Implants might be costlier but can yeild the highest retun on your long term oral health investment.
  3. Teeth Whitening – It is performed when you have a discoloured set of teeth and you want to bring back that perfect white smile you once had.
  4. Inlays and Onlays – Inlay and Onlay treatment is done when you have a cavity and you cannot do a regular filling. It’s an alternative to a large filling and is cheaper than dental crowns.
  5. Dental Veneers – Veneers are ultra thin shells made out of ceramic materials. They are bonded to the front of your tooth. It is mainly used if you have discoloured teeth, that whitining procedures can not fix, or gaps between your teeth.
  6. Dental Crown – A Dental Crown is used when your tooth is chipped. It is like a tooth cover or cap which normalises your tooth and brings back the smile you had.
  7. Dental Bridge – A dental bridge is a technique used to fill in the gap when you have lost your natural teeth. Bridges are fitted on two abutment teeth with the artificial teeth in between.

What is the difference between general dentistry and cosmetic dentistry?

General dentistry identifies and resolves problems that are causing pain or discomfort and could ultimately lead to more complications. The treatments like cavity fillings, root canals, teeth extraction, and denture fixtures are part of it. It could also include issues related to oral hygiene. In general dentistry, only a couple of cosmetic techniques are used such as bonding or teeth whitening.

Cosmetic dentistry mostly deals with creating the perfect smile our patients deserve. It mainly consists of treatments like Dental Implants, crowns, bridges, inlays and overlays, etc. Sometimes general and cosmetic dentistry overlap. In some cases, a decaying tooth has to be extracted and then a bridge or implant needs be installed so that other teeth dosen’t move and the patient can maintain a proper face structure.

So it can be said that there is no definitive line in between cosmetic and general dentistry.
