If you want to know more about dentures, we’ve collected a few relevant frequently asked questions. If you couldn’t find what you are looking for, please don’t hesitate to contact us on (905) 608-9000 and we will answer your question.

What are dentures?

Dentures are a set of artificial teeth and gums that your denturist installs when you lose a number of your natural teeth. A full denture replaces the whole upper or lower set of teeth. Partial dentures on the other hand only replace a fewer number of teeth. Dentures are custom-designed according to your mouth and are matched to the real teeth in your mouth. Your dentist might recommend getting a denture if you have lost a few or all of your teeth due to an accident, a disease or poor oral health.

Why wear a denture?

Denture is used to help maintain the structure of your cheeks and lips. It supports your facial structure and helps maintain solid food chewing ability. In cases where retaining natural teeth could cause a risk due to diseases, dentures might be the prefered solution.

How many types of dentures are there?

There are 3 types of dentures:

  • Partial Denture:Partial dentures are used when the patient have lost a few of your upper or lower teeth and alternative treatments such as dental bridges and dental implant can’t be applied. Partial dentures
  • consist of one or more artificial teeth held together by clasps so that it can fit inside the patient’s mouth. They are not permanently attached to the natural teeth therefore, it can be taken out at night before sleeping and for cleaning whenever necessary.
  • Full Denture:Full Dentures are fully artificial teeth. It is used when the patient has lost all of their teeth due to accident or oral complications. Full dentures are attached to the mouth with either suction or oral adhesives. It is easily removed at night before sleeping or for cleaning whenever required.
  • Overdenture:If there are few natural teeth left or the patient has dental implants and wants to fit dentures over them, the utilisation of overdenture would be the most approperate solution. Overdenture is also removable for cleaning but implants are not removable.

Why do you need to clean dentures?

Whichever kind of denture one uses, it has to be cleaned daily in a similar way the patient would brush and clean the natural teeth. Even though dentures are made of artificial teeth all oral problems like bacteria, plaque, tatar, etc. can build-up on them causing harm to the remaining teeth and gums.

How to clean dentures?

It’s easy to clean dentures. You just need to take them out of your mouth and run them in clean water to wash any food particles stuck or any plaque or tartar build-up. Then brush the denture with a soft brush and denture cleaner. Do not use electric brush or toothpaste to clean the denture as it can damage it. After brushing, you have to rinse them properly under clean running water. While the dentures are out of your mouth, don’t forget to clean the remaining natural teeth and gums.

How to preserve your dentures?

Before sleeping, always remove your denture to avoid damaging them by sleep grinding. Also taking the dentures out at night gives your gums some relaxation. To preserve them well always keep the dentures submerged in warm water, not hot water. Dentures may lose their shape if they are not kept in water. You can use denture soaking only if your dentures are not made of metals. Denture soaking solutions may tarnish the metal dentures.

Who requires dentures?

Denture is not only for senior citizens but anyone could end up getting dentures. People playing sports like Hockey, victims of accidents or people with some genetic disorders may need to get dentures. If you or someone you know might need them, regardless of your age, don’t hesitate to let us know via (905) 608-9000.
