Root Canal Treatment

You might want to know more about root canal treatment and we tried to answer as many frequently asked questions as we could. If you still have a question, please do not hesitate to contact us on (905) 608-9000.

What is a root canal?

Inside the tooth there is pulp tissue. Pulp tissue could either be infected or badly damaged due to decay. Root canal treatment removes all infected or damaged tissues from the root system of the tooth. Instead of extracting a badly damaged tooth, root canal treatment could be the solution to retain that tooth.

What is a pulp?

The dental pulp is a soft substance in the centre of the tooth that consists of nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissues. The hollow part in the centre of the tooth is the pulp chamber, it contains pulp which goes down to the canals of the root of the teeth and into the bone.

What damages a tooth’s pulp in the first place?

A tooth’s pulp can become irritated, inflamed, and infected due to several reasons such as deep decay, and/or large fillings, a crack or chip in the tooth, or injury to the face. These are just a few reasons and your dentist could elaborate following a thorough dental exam.

What are the signs that you need a Root Canal Treatment?

Not all types of tooth pain indicate a root canal issue. But signs of severe infection which may require a root canal might include:

  1. Serious teeth pain when eating or when you put pressure on the infected area
  2. Teeth pain and sensitivity to hot or cold food or beverages that lingers after the hot or cold stimuli have been removed
  3. Tenderness or swelling in the gums near the area of teeth pain or a small, pimple-like bump on the gums near the area of teeth pain
  4. Darkening of the tooth

How is a root canal treatment performed?

Most root canal treatments might require 2 visits to your dentist office. At the first appointment, the infected pulp and nerve tissue are removed “this should eliminate any pain from the tooth” and the root canal is cleaned and filled with a biocompatible material and the tooth is usually sealed with a temporary filling. On the second visit, a dental crown or another permanent restorative solution should be installed to prevent any further infection.

How to maintain and care for teeth after a root canal treatment?

Here are a few ways to take care of your teeth after a root canal:

  1. Practice good oral hygiene by brushing teeth twice a day, and flossing them at least once. Taking care of your teeth can help prevent future complications
  2. Visit the dentist and hygienist regularly for cleanings and examinations
  3. Avoid chewing on hard foods such as ice which can cause teeth to break, and can harm root canals

How successful are root canal treatments?

Root canal treatment is a very successful procedure. The procedure has more than a 95% success rate. Teeth fixed with a root canal treatment may last a lifetime. It’s on you to make the root canal treatment last as long as you can maintain impeccable hygiene.

Is root canal treatment painful?

Long ago, root canal treatments often were much painful. With advances in dental and local anesthetics, most people don’t feel any pain. In fact, it’s probably more painful to live with a decaying tooth.

What are the other options to root canal?

Saving your natural teeth is the best option because with your natural teeth you can enjoy a wide variety of food for a nutritious diet. To keep natural teeth, root canal treatment is the preferred option. It is always easier and cheaper to extract the damaged tooth but this is rarely the best choice.

If the tooth has to be extracted, you can go for a dental bridge, implant or partial denture to restore your mouth’s chewing function. But these treatments are more time consuming and expensive than a root canal.
